Speed of light and beyond
Recently (as in a few years ago) a particle accelerator in Germany managed to push three atoms of xenon to the speed of light. This is an amazing development because the atoms did not convert to light; meaning achieving the speed of light is possible. This completely changes our view on Einstein, who said you cannot even reach the speed of light (essentially proving Einstein was an idiot). If reaching the speed of light is possible, who is to say that exceeding it isn't? I think that just like with sound, when an object exceeds the speed of light the light will follow the object (like how when a jet flies faster than the speed of sound and the sound comes after it).

That doesn't make him an idiot and just because that managed to hit the speed doesn't mean we could one day travel at the speed of light.

True, this was only three atoms. And we don't know what effects that speed will have on living tissue...

You'd need protection that's for sure, I recently watched a special detailing the "What If" technology of a recovered space ship. You'd need to equalize the ship itself somehow or it'd be torn apart along with those inside. The primary theory was a pocket of warped space(warp drive) the ship sat in, condensing the space in front and expanding it behind the ship to produce thrust while the ship itself remained safe in it's pocket of normal space.

True, we would need some form of protection. Especially from the inertia, which would kill us very quickly. I'm not sure what could negate inertia though. I have heard of our ideas on making an engine that contracts the space in front of a ship, and expands the space behind it. Possibly using gravity waves.

Would antimater work? like use anti-inertia?

0Parasky0- 01-21-2008

Antimatter is just that; anti-matter. It would destroy matter, how would that help move faster than light?

Jinn- 01-21-2008

Well if everything has an opposite (IE matter- antimatter) then there should be an anti-inertia i dunno its 3:48 not thinking right.

0Parasky0- 01-21-2008

Gravity doesn't have an opposite. We know for a fact there is no such thing as anti gravity. Well, from that we can draw one of two conclusions; 1. Some things just don't have an opposing force. 2. Gravity doesn't exist and something else binds us to the Earth. Take your pick, both of them can't be disproven.

Jinn- 01-21-2008

God is holding us all down to the earth duh!!! gravity is a myth.

0Parasky0- 01-21-2008

Technically, gravity is a theory. But we call thermodynamics a law and it can't be proven, so I can conclude that we don't know the difference between a theory and law.
